There’s no doubt that the BMW 3 Series is one of the most popular compact executive cars of all time. Now though, there’s a new one, and this sixth generation model is the pick of the bunch.
Unveiled on October 14 in Munich , the latest 3 Series
model builds on the success of previous ones , but takes a whole new approach to design, interior layout and even performance. Indeed it was created by Adrian von Hooydonk, whose previous work includes the 6 Series and X5, so there’s every reason to get excited. In short, it looks fantastic.
In true BMW style, there are more technical facts and performance figures than you can shake a stick at, but actually they make for some interesting reading. It’s rear wheel drive, around 50 kilos lighter than the current E90 version (in basic trim), and is also 50mm longer. Some new suspension, improved power steering and a multitude of new turbocharged engines all contribute towards a car that’s faster, more economical and a lot of fun to drive.
The good news is that this new BMW will still cater for a variety of different motorists, and the long list of models certainly confirms this. From the 316d, 318d and 320d with diesel engines to the 320i, 328i and 335i with petrols, there’s clearly no shortage of choice to come. Trim levels galore will also be available, and the standard roster of ES, SE, Sport and M Sport will be on offer, in addition the new ‘Luxury’ and ‘Modern’.
Unquestionably, the 3 Series has been a marker for excellence for many years, but this new F30 variant is rather good to say the least. From the way it looks both inside and out, to the phenomenal range of engines on offer, it’s sure to be a real winner when it goes on sale in 2012
